You have at sometime in your life probably come across some wonderful-sounding terms such as "chakra", "prana", "aura", and "tantra" while you have been perusing books on spirituality, sex, and healing in the New Age literature section of your local book shop. But what do these terms actually mean?

Are all of these Energy Healings the same thing?

Chakra or the energy centre is a term used in Pranic healing, which is an ancient Hindu system of energy healing. "Prana" means life energy. "Aura" is another term which can be traced to Pranic healing. Your Aura is a non-physical body which surrounds you and consists of energy; this energy exists along with your physical body. The aura that surrounds your body is believed to consist of seven layers, which pertain to the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of each individual as manifested by energy. The Study of the colour and thickness of auras can give an idea as to the state of health of an individual.

There are six colours which are associated with the aura and are interpreted into six personalities. All of these colours are present in an individual however one or two are more pronounced. Green - ambitious achiever Blue - spiritual peacemaker White - unconventional chameleon Red - activist Orange - creative communicator Violet - psychic Although Tantra is usually associated with the practice of sex and spirituality, it is also another type of energy healing. It is derived from the word "tan" which means to spread or expand. The concept of being connected is a recurring theme in Tantric writings on sex and spirituality. Using Tantra as a method of healing, spirituality and sex figure prominently. It is believed that the union of a man and a woman can reach spiritual levels during orgasm, which removes from the body and mind collected impurities. These impurities which are negative energies can in turn manifest themselves as physical illnesses.

Unlike Pranic and Tantric healings, which have Hindu origins, Reiki originated in Japan? It is a much younger type of healing than that of Pranic and Tantric healings, although these have been rediscovered in the early 1900's. The term Reiki means universal energy, an energy which is brought forth by a higher intelligence. Students of Reiki are taught how to tap into this energy and use it to heal physical, emotional, and mental illnesses.

Although Pranic, Tantra, and Reiki are all types of energy healing, they differ in the type of energy used for healing: life energy, sexual energy, and universal energy respectively.

The concepts of the connectedness of mind, body, and spirit; the connection of individuals to all living and nonliving things around them and to the universe; and how energy impacts physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being are some of the more obvious similarities of these three healing methods.

Why Do People Turn to Energy Healing?

Pranic, Tantric, and Reiki are considered to be alternative types of healing. In spite of the widespread availability and relative accessibility of modern medicine, why is it that more and more people are being drawn to them? Here are some possible reasons:

* Energy healing worked where modern medicine failed.

For a number of reasons which are explainable and also unexplainable, modern medicine has failed to heal illness and numerous medical conditions in a great many people. Of course there is no research or scientific data which would be able to support this statement. However the families of those who are dying and also the dying patient would always be willing to take the risk of using all available alternative healing methods ranging from herbals and organics, faith healers, witch doctors, and New Age healing techniques just in the slim hope that a cure would come of it.

* People perceive modern medicine to be isolating.

Modern Medical treatments are quite often focused on the disease and its cause, which in turn can make a patient feel isolated and treated like a mere host of the disease. Although those who practice modern medicine are becoming more open to the ideas of alternative healing, and recent developments in hospital practice are beginning to promote the use of holistic treatment for patients, the perception still exists. Unlike in energy healing, since energy and spirituality are intimately linked, the patient feels that all aspects of his health are being attended to.

* Energy healing is non-obtrusive and natural thus it is safer.

Repeated surgical procedures are both physically and emotionally traumatic for patients. It is then quite logical and also an attractive option to both the patient and his or her family to seek out a far less stressful health alternative. More so, with the ever rising popularity of New Age religions, going down the natural road are the way to go.

* Energy healing is a good way of relieving stress.

Meditation comes as part and parcel in all types of energy healing and this is an added come-on for those people who are highly stressed. Also, because there is no need for sophisticated and hi tech equipment it becomes even more convenient for students and future students of energy healing.

The differing opinions of alternative healing and modern medicine continue as both parties present the benefits of their approach. However in the final analysis, the most important thing is the restoration of good health.
